This Southwest-style ground beef-and-biscuit casserole is made with taco beef, chilies, tomatoes, sour cream, and lots of cheese. It's said that John Wayne contributed the original recipe himself in 1979!
You will only need a few ingredients to make this savory, beefy, John Wayne Casserole. Let's get started!
First, sauté the diced onions and bell pepper in a skillet with oil until softened.
Next, add ground beef to the skillet, breaking apart until brown. Then add taco seasoning and simmer.
Next, make a quick dough by combining Bisquick and water, and spread into the bottom of a casserole dish.
Then spread the taco beef filling over the dough.
Next, top this with a layer of tomato slices and green chilies or jalapenos.
Next, mix up a topping of sour cream, mayonnaise, and shredded mozzarella. Spread this over the tomato layer.
Finally, sprinkle over an additional layer of shredded cheese.
Pop the casserole in the oven and bake until the cheese is bubbling hot.
Time to eat your delicious John Wayne Casserole! For an extra spicy kick, drizzle with Enchilada sauce :)
