What Are S’Mores?
So, what is a s’more? If you’ve never had one, a s’more is a slab of chocolate with a toasted marshmallow sandwiched between two graham crackers. The heat from the marshmallow melts into the chocolate, creating an ooey-gooey, crunchy, mini dessert sandwich. Yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds.
The s’more is believed to have originated around campfires, where toasted marshmallows abound. You’ll now find recipes for making s’mores on the stovetop, in the oven, in the microwave, and even in the panini press!
Where Did the Name Come From?
The name “s’more” is a contraction of the words “some more.” This appears to have been coined by the bonafide masters of campfires and cookies: the Girl Scouts. In a 1927 edition of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, the guidebook included the recipe for “Some More.” The instructions involved toasting two marshmallows over the fire to a “crispy, gooey state” and putting them inside “a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich.”
Why would the recipe be called “Some More” in the first place, though? The Girl Scout recipe included the note, “though it tastes like ‘some more’ one is really enough.” A lesson in the dangers of overindulgence, maybe. With all that melted marshmallow and chocolate going on, it’s probably a wise warning.
Later in the 30s and 50s, the shortened term “s’more” grew in popularity for the graham cracker-chocolate-marshmallow combination. Nowadays, no bonfire or campout is complete without s’mores. But why stop there? The humble s’more has inspired loads of dessert ideas to date, and we’ve rounded up some of our favorites below!
