What is a Crockpot?
Arriving on the home cooking scene in the 70s, the crockpot is an electric pot with a lid that uses moist heat to cook food over extended periods of time. The crockpot was created as a bean cooker, and eventually was adapted to all kinds of uses!
Due to their design, you can safely leave crockpots to cook the contents for hours. This makes them great for bringing out the flavor in meals like tender roasts, briskets, hearty stews, soups, and chilis. And of course, chicken recipes!
They’re also an ideal way to make workweek dinners easier since you can prep your meal in the morning and then let it cook low and slow during the day. There’s nothing like coming home at the end of a long day and being greeted with the welcoming aromas of a homecooked meal.
Are a Crockpot and Slow Cooker the Same Thing?
The terms crockpot and slow cooker are often used interchangeably. And while a Crock-Pot® is a style of slow cooker, not all slow cookers are in fact a crockpot! There are some main differences between the two:
- Crock-Pot® is actually a brand name. The word “crockpot” has become the generic term for this specific type of slow cooker (think: “Q-Tip” and “Kleenex” brands are also now generic words for similar style products).
- The construction is unique. The original Crock-Pot® consists of a stoneware pot set inside a heating unit, with low and high settings. This ceramic “crock” is the main difference between a crockpot and other types of slow cookers.
- Slow cooker is the name of an appliance, and not a brand name. These are machines of a similar style that also use moist heat to cook food slowly over time. However, there are many versions of slow cookers out there.
- Slow cookers heat from the bottom. They are generally a metal pot that sits on top of a heating element, and have multiple settings.
Many kitchen brands now make their own versions of crockpot-style slow cookers. Not all slow cookers are the same though, so it’s a good idea to read through the instruction manual for your machine when getting started!
